    Hell yeah! Hell no!
Needless to say, after you gain sufficient proficiency in some non-alive aspect of a combat art (for example, a kata), you can extract some technique from it and practise it with a partner, ramping up the intensity over time from totally-compliant all the way to open-ruleset sparring situations.

Basically, you and your training partner are adding pressure-testing to see if the technique you've selected from the kata can be effective. If so, keep working to improve delivery. If not, test something else.

You have that option if you have the time to become proficient at the kata first, or if you have a background in an 'alive' combat discipline which has similar waza to the ones in the kata you're looking at. The latter makes for interesting study.

If you're in a hurry, however, a more direct route is something like Judo. You can always pick up kata-related stuff later in life, and the 'alive' training you get before then will give you a perspective on kata and bunkai that those without an 'alive' background do not have.

Putting your earlier 'alive' training together with the later kata-related study may satisfy your wish for both practicality and historical/cultural involvement.

Ok, im 1min in , if the idiot knew how to Kimura it would have been pretty good.

2:31, his partner compliantly went down. Leads me to believe its a "you get past my slow punches, then do Aikido with gloves on" situation. In that situation any rational human being would double leg and dump him on his head.

In conclusion, I dont really know what im watching, but it isnt sparring.

Edit: After a bit more research, I kind of like this. Its not ideal, but its more than I ever expected from Aikidoka.

He's kind of made it into sport Jujitsu. Cant fault him for it though, he genuinely seems to have some good ideas.

I don't think so, the victim just has no grappling at all. My opinion on the guy in the gi's Aikido is that his BJJ is not bad.

There's stuff with helmets too, I've never seen Aikido like this.

The question though is: Is this Aikido even?
