TKD Zealot:
To answer the question about jump-kicks, you have to consider:
1. Balance
2. Movement
3. Penetration
Balance is required for more than remaining physically centered or staying on your feet. It also affects the ability to alter attacks as needed and avoid/deflect attacks. When you are in the air, if only for a second, you solely relying upon your existing momentum and gravity to keep your balance. You are, in effect, gambling that nothing will change between the time that you 'begin' the technique and the time that the technique is 'completed' and ready to strike again. Unlike mats the ground will probably not be as forgiving... nor as safe
Movement is referring to your ability to manuever... and your opponent's as well. Once more, outside the controlled environment of a sport TKD match, there are far too many variables to depend upon your opponent moving in a predictable manner or attacking in a predictable manner.
Penetration is in reference to your ability to inflict penetrative damage. That is, damage that will impair your opponent's ability to fight. It's fine and well to insist, "If I hit his head...", but a static attack is a static attack. Jumping forward further exacerbates the issue, because you have both committed yourself and placed yourself closer to your opponent, who may have other ideas.
Ultimately, jump-attacks rely on too many IFs. Yes, they could OCCASIONALLY work, but that's trusting in luck. Rely too much on luck and you are asking for a world of hurt. Lady Luck is too fickle. Hey, it's your life. -

By the way, way back there on page 3, TKD Zealot said this about me:
.If you would of had the dedication to last more then 3 months in tkd
For the record, I was in TKD for five years (and my original organization was in fact WTF -- or at least that's what's on my certificates) and obtained the level of black belt.
Hey, I Give BJJ's you do know Jiu-Jitsu Girls Can Take The Mount, right?
"I'm not tense; just terribly, terribly alert."
