Judo is awful because it teaches kids bad habits like the turtle. Judo is awful because Seoi Nage is a worthless throw. Judo is awful because any wrestler that comes in the dojo pwns. Judo is awful because you're dependant on the Judogi.

This is stuff I heard just tonight at my kids class no less.

Speaking as a tall guy, Seoi Nage is definitely not worthless against me.

I still don't get why Judo banned perfectly good leg techniques. What are they afraid of anyway?

Ok I'm going to answer this for the last time make it a sticky or whatever you do here.

Banning leg grabs has nothing to do with the effectiveness of them, nothing, nothing(saying it three times to make it a negative again). It's the same reason olympic TKD "banned" punches to the head, the same reason boxing "banned" head butts and elbows or any other strike for that matter. THEY WANT THE COMPETITORS TO DEMONSTRATE THE FINER POINTS OF THE EFFECTIVENESS OF THE STYLE OF MARTIAL ART THEY ARE REPRESENTING.

Regardless of what sport you are playing if it pits 2 combatants testing the skill, worthiness, and effectiveness of the techniques they have spent generations developing, it's a martial art. So why not go complain to the IOC that wrestling should start allowing strikes to prove the worthiness of a double leg are you?

Now the reason this happened competitors started finding these little loopholes in the rules and took the easy path to secure wins. Instead of fighting to win they fought not to lose which deprives all of the people the thrill of seeing two men pit themselves against each in a test of will and skills without either one of them actually getting killed.

Moving along that same backwards logic should we not start adding swords and shields to the players to finally settle the question of who is better at killing one another.

My point is this it's a rule in a sport that some of us play for fun, fitness, and socialization. Don't get hung up on the rules practice your Judo with leg grabs and just remember that when you compete you can't use them. Then when you get disqualified after a few tournaments you may stop doing them in practice to insure you have a better tournament experience.

Or you will find a Sambo club :).
Judo is only gentle for the guy on top.
