a quick google reveals that at least one supplies uses a half tang
    link to site.
Other suppliers don't mention tang at all, and I'm not sure what safety checks are normal at XMA events.

I didn't see anything expensive. That Punisher ninjer thingy was only $30, and kinda cool.

Looks like performance to me. Killing blows don't look pretty, they do the job correctly, accurately, and with as much efficiency as possible.

That's not saying that maybe the guy 'doesn't' have any factual martial skill; it certainly takes skill to do what he's doing, but I wouldn't call it martial arts. He's leaving himself pretty open for the majority of the performance, but I think, as stated before, it's primarily XMA, which is geared towards performing as opposed to martial techniques.

That video make me feel sick each time I watch it.

I suppose it's because I've been involved in Japanese Sword Arts for so long now, cut myself through stupidity and, seen a student drop a sword at his feet and watched how the kissaki (tip) stuck it's self into the wooden floor a few inches from his leading foot.

This video is on another scale and like I said before, the guy who is almost directly hit, is one lucky fella for sure.
