    Well, our bodies evolved through millenia of hardship. They can withstand a whole lot more than we think they can. Getting our minds as "tough" as our bodies--so we don't fold up when the first non-cushioned contact occurs--is something that a makiwara, and similar tools, can help with.

    For me it's done several things... unlike hitting a bag it gives me instant feedback as to if I'm hitting properly. I've found for me I get lazy hitting the bag. The second thing is yes after hitting this thing a few hundred times a session I have 0 fear of punching anything soft and squishy like a human. So you don't have that moment of hesitation.
