What is "Lubricant, Solid Film"?

So, I just got a copy of the September 2001 Army manual that tells you how to maintain, disassemble, and service an AR. I decided to read it in order to educate myself about ARs.

I have read several references to "Lubricant, Solid Film", which they keep saying is toxic and requires gloves and ventilation to use.

What is it? I know it's not CLP since that is mentioned seperately. Is it something that is required for AR maintenance?

I guess it gives me a general idea, but I still don't have an idea specifically what the Army would use for small arms.

So it's molybedenum disulfide. Is that also used as a coating on lead bullets?

This is a good rundown from Sprinco on molybdenite and its use as dry weapon lubrication.

What is the real truth about Moly?

The chief risks are breathing microscopic particles of MoS2 dust, and the fact that it is corrosive because MoS2 + H2O reacts to form H2SO4 + molybdenum.

Prolonged or regular inhalation of dry moly and the continued irritation of lung tissue can lead to lung cancer and death. Anyone who works with dry moly should wear a respirator and safety glasses at all times.
