Aside from the above example, are there any MMA guys with a background in Sumo? Seems like it would be interesting to look into.

Other than an ammy "sumo" fighter in UFC 1 and another oversized outsider who appeared shortly thereafter, nope.

Rumour has it that sumo's part of Machida's family background. Don't know if that's true.

Tangential but, does any one know the status of the match fixing scandal? Any chance of sumo being on TV again this year?

I read somewhere that Machida competed in ammy Sumo in Brazil as a youngster. Dunno how that is, but I should imagine that it's a small pond.

There's an O-Sumo basho on right now. You can watch it if TV Japan is part of your cable package. Start time today is around 4 AM EST.

In answer to questions asked before, oshidashi means to slam somebody out of bounds via open hand thrusts to their C. of G. (but you can be creative and go for the throat if you like: anything that keeps the adversary off-balance in a backward motion so that he can't set up any counter before his ass hits the floor or--better yet--he flies backward through the door). A kotenage is somewhat like an ogoshi but you grip the back of the opponent's belt from underhook hoist him up a bit and then flip him over and head-spike him into the floor, the door or anything that's appropriately solid.
