most decent competitions score all head punches that aren't hooks, plus haito and uraken. and they'd allow hooks if they were more decent (silly straight punch cultists. and this is coming from somoene who worships the tsuki anyway), although there's usually some leeway given for slightly circular punches to get around someone's guard (basically overhands).

then again competition kumite, albeit fun, sucks.

Shobu-ippon competitions under the WUKF and AJKA rule-sets love to see their gyaku-tsuki, kizami-tsuki and uraken, as well as mae-geri and mawashi-geri. On the other hand, the rules state they can and will score any technique that is found within the katas. They just need to be performed with precision, timing, accuracy and good control. So mawashi-tsuki and haito-uchi and shuto-uchi are allowed, but rare to see them scored.

Osu everyone! The trouble with punching to the face; and I’m working from the supposition that it’s bare knuckles, is the damage to the hands. The UFC made gloves mandatory in 197 (UFC 14), not to protect the opponent, but the fighter’s hands. Most of us know someone with a depressed fifth knuckle from a streetfight (the old haymaker punch!). Kyokushin Budokai Karate utilises open hand strikes to the head (shotei) in competition, those that remember the old Pancrase will remember how effective these could be delivered. The advantages, in my opinion, outweigh the disadvantages, particularly in a streetfight where it drastically reduces the potential for damage to the hands. Within the dojo, we try to work with a synthesis of both open and closed hand strikes, we will utilise open hand strikes for straight on and roundhouse strikes (shotei uchi and shotei mawashi uchi), but use a closed fist for upper cuts. If we have to strike with a closed fist into the face (we all know in a stress situation it isn’t that easy!), we try and strike into the nose or jaw area where there is not such a heavy bone density. Like the Kudo fighters, in the dojo we wear similar (but not so expensive!) protective head gear.
