kudo daido juku FTW
SPACE HEADBUTTS, FOOL!
on a more serious and actually on topic note, it's worth pointing out that kudo daido-juku has actually disassociated itself from karate (in a similar way to how sanda could be considered a style by itself now that it's an established competition ruleset, or how early full contact karate because kickboxing), but it's essentially a karate-like base, with grappling (taken from judo, i think) and headbutts (courtesy of the spce helmets).
also i think there are kyokushin off-shoots who use face punching, as well as a kyok competition ruleset that uses them (don't remember the name, however, or even if they went along with it, just that there are one or two videos on youtube).
alternatively, you could go the point sparring route and do JKA shotokan in japan:

H.Royama group (I think its called Kyokushinkan) have separate competition called Shinken Shobu that has face punching.
Seidokaikan has face punching (with boxing gloves)
Shidokan has the triathlon rules including rounds of Kickboxing
Kudo as above + its off-shoot Zendokai (not to be confused with the australian MA)
Shin Karate (boxing gloves)
These are the ones I am aware off if there are more please share -

I dunno if this has been mentioned yet http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=33867 although it might have fizzled out since it's a 5 year old thread.

Yes, that's pretty typical. Dojo-sparring is often one thing, while shiai is something totally different. Shotokan shiai is about display of technique/timing. It's why only a very limited number of techniques are ever scored. The judges already have in mind what they want to see aesthetically and are waiting to award victory to the first person who can show it to them. In many places dojo sparring has (had?) a much broader purpose than to prepare for a specific competition ruleset (i.e. to prepare for self-defense or to develop karate proficiency in general).
Self-defense Force is Mikio Yahara's org/brand of Shotokan. If I could do a karate seminar with anyone, he would be my first choice.
