Nope you aren't the only one. I've found, in my limited experience, that the more sparring and fighting a school does the more variations in naming that occurs. Also, the you get more stink eye from the teacher when you ask.

I had one teacher basically say "Go do wushu (modern) if you are that worried about the posture names."

I think I know the English names for 3 techniques. I have never been taught the names of anything in any Chinese dialect. It's been 6 years.

My sifu would say "Hit like this, like baby cat playing." Which evolved into "Baby leopard plays with water." Which evolved into "Baby leopard strike". Which evolved into "Leopard strike" which evolved into "Hit like this".

My teacher's occasional attempts at translating the Chinese is idiosyncratic. (The photocopy is from his own teacher, now deceased.) Something like "Fair Lady Works With Shuttles" ends up being, "Some Girl And That Thing With the Cotton." Some are more literal. One move is "Watch Out, Now Move Over Here, Then Smack Guy's Balls."

I forget the Filipino name, but in escrima the 4th strike was described by my teacher as "like when you feed the chickens".
