There is a whole heaping helping of people talking past each other in this thread. Some of the modded and anti-mods seem to see things as strictly black and white.

Humans have practiced body adornment since there have been humans. Social standards change over time, geographic locations and cultures.

If you're applying your understanding of your societal mores, whether pro or anti mod, you should be aware that your beliefs are highly subjective (even if everyone else in your neighborhood, city, country holds the same beliefs) and will most likely change over your own lifetime to a degree that you find alarming as an old person.

I'm not going to go slice hundreds of incisions into my body in an elaborate scarification ritual, but that doesn't give me the right to condemn others who do this as a rite of passage in their culture.

None of this changes the fact that it's human nature to impose one's own cultural mores upon others, even when they're not from your culture.* It also doesn't change the fact that doing so is rather close minded.

*Please don't bring basic morality and ethics into this discussion. When I say cultural mores, I'm not talking about murder or rape.
