How would I break the HCG? Is there a specific type of grip-break that I should use, or should I just intercept my opponent's hand before it takes the HCG? Or both?
    It goes like this:
1.) Aggressively go for the grip you want, depending on relative stances, height, left vs right, etc, using basic grip/move sequences.
2.) Intercept/block uke attempts to grip you/go through related grip/move sequences
3.) Uke gets the HCG, cut the grip engage in grip/move or move/grip sequence(s).

Judoka_uK has posted on the basics if you will search around for it.

I'll look for it. Just had my instructor playing with the HCG on me the other day, and it was more difficult for me to break than a regular lapel or sleeve grip.

Although to be honest if you're instructor is worth his salt, as a beginner, you shouldn't really be able to break his grip. Then again if you were a decent powerlifter and he's an old rec player maybe not.

From what I've read, and from what I perceive that I'm doing, I use a lot of these concepts already. I just need to practice it some more.

I definitely need to try that first gripping strategy, and I think the detail about taking the slack out of the gi first will help my grip breaks.

Sounds like you're on your way. Its just a matter of drilling and practice.

Although probably best not to get too caught up in gripping during randori, try and balance adding the gripping with still working on your techniques.

I have my first tournament ever tomorrow afternoon. If my knee behaves itself, I think I'll do well.

    You are a generous fellow.

I'll try to get some video. Still waiting to see some video from my sambo tournament a few weeks back. I did great, but I think my entry for the kani basami was too shallow.

Well, I won my first two matches by ippon, one with an osoto gari, and the other with a huge ura nage. The third match I injured my already-injured knee and couldn't continue.

I guess I'm actually gonna let it heal this time.
