OH bless Kyrgyzstan (.kg)...
This video answers any question you could have about the effectiveness of suplexes, especially in professional MMA.
Not that Omega's videos aren't as good as this one...but I don't think any other suplex video comes close to back-to-back killer suplexes. Especially when the guy pulling them off is Dan Severn.
"Both in the black trunks....moustache to Severn". Gotta love early UFC.
Suplex #1 @ 4:57
Suplex #2 @ 5:05 (8 seconds later).

I remember jumping off the couch when I saw that fight back in high school. A few things about it lead me right back to the same questions though... First off, Severn is a fucking monster and Anthony looks like he was carved out of a broomstick. The 70 lb advantage definately helped the success of those sup's. And second, neither of them looked like they did anything more than give Severn a better position, which was part of my question in the first place. They were beautiful though...

lol, the guy was certainly horrified afterwards, and probably dizzy as well, so obviously the OMG factor played in. Still, being that he was <200 with a 260lb gorilla on his back it's not really convincing the throws are why he couldn't get up. Specially considering he was still tryig to fight off a choke.
There'sno doubt about the results, those throws won the fight for him... But could he do that to Frye or Coleman? Or even another fighter that size, like Royce Gracie maybe?
I'm not trying to discredit Severn or the suplex's he used, I hope it doesn't sound like that... I'm just asking if he would've even tried it on a guy he didn't have a massive weight advantage on, or a guy who's heard of grappling. -

I'm a fan of the suplex in a sports environment, it's a relatively easy move to execute (compared to other high-scoring throws like the flying mare) and gives you a lot of points, and can also translate into a good position.
In a self defence environment I would be weary of using it as it strikes me that if you pull it off successfully and spike their head in to the ground you may hurt them more than you planned (and end up in a jail cell), whereas if you execute it more as a throw, and land them on their shoulders or back, then very little would be gained, other than being an overly dramatic way of taking someone to the ground.
