As in, you consider the underhook on arm and leg interchangeable? You can also play half-guard with an overhook, with the knee shield and no hook on the arm at all, inverting with no under or overhook and you have to be as shallow as possible with your trapped leg etc. etc.

I can already play a perfectly serviceable one on white and most blue belts, actually. But my A-game is going to be half-guard for the foreseeable future, and the 'good news' for me is that there's no way to force me to play open guard if I want to pull half.

I'm seeing it, it's still wrong. Half butterfly is more like butterfly than it is like under-hook half; knee-shield is more like spider guard than it is like x-guard and so on.

A little deep half can be seen at about 4:20 as I roll here:

Yes that is a top hat.

Since I tore up my left knee a few weeks ago, I've been playing a lot of deep half, mostly because it's a safe place for that knee to sit.

I'm having trouble finding easy entrances into the deep half, though. Any situations that I should be looking for in particular?

Here is a link to a Half Guard thread I made a few years ago:

    http://www.bullshido.net/forums/showthread.php?t=97579

and more specifically, the post first post on Deep Half Guard and entry into it:

I'll never proclaim to know much, but I still use the info in that thread on a daily basis (it still works. YAY!)

Thanks man. We're working on stuff at an open mat right now, so I'm gonna leave these threads open to refer to.
