Is Deep Half a fad?

The fundamentals of the individual positions, due to their unique components, may be differences, but if they fall under the catagory "Open Guard" or "Half Guard" then there are certain fundamentals that are the same for those categories that they have to follow, i.e. you want to get an under-hook in normal Half Guard AND Deep Half Guard, you are just under-hooking differently, you want to get on your side, and you want to be deep on the leg (again, both normal AND Deep Half Guard).

As in, you consider the underhook on arm and leg interchangeable? You can also play half-guard with an overhook, with the knee shield and no hook on the arm at all, inverting with no under or overhook and you have to be as shallow as possible with your trapped leg etc. etc.

Don't be surprised if some of you training partners (if they aren't already) start forcing you to play Open Guard. The good news, however, is you will get better at it.

I can already play a perfectly serviceable one on white and most blue belts, actually. But my A-game is going to be half-guard for the foreseeable future, and the 'good news' for me is that there's no way to force me to play open guard if I want to pull half.

I'm seeing it, it's still wrong. Half butterfly is more like butterfly than it is like under-hook half; knee-shield is more like spider guard than it is like x-guard and so on.

Since I tore up my left knee a few weeks ago, I've been playing a lot of deep half, mostly because it's a safe place for that knee to sit.

I'm having trouble finding easy entrances into the deep half, though. Any situations that I should be looking for in particular?
