I think that all of this conjecture is irrelevant. The people who are capable of defending themselves are always going to be those who train the most. There is never going to be a magical art that requires no strength, co-ordination or physical toughness that will prevent the weak from getting pummeled.
In turn , as long as people train in martial arts, people are always going to find it entertaining to watch the most impressive ones beat on each other.
If anything, only the stupid will watch MMA and go, "but I can never defend myself with that, that requires effort and training, and I have to get hit".
Oh wait, that happens now.
