Another class which disappeared throughout the country for that same reason is Driver's Education; in addition to making several decades-old teen movies even more foreign to modern viewers, the removal of driver's education has assisted the economic disenfranchisement of students who can't get mommy and daddy to pay for hideously overpriced driving schools.

EDIT: Sorry about the tangent. The way you wrote “politics” instead of “civics,” coupled with the way you presented the class as a new idea, made me think something along the lines of “...a whole generation has never heard of what was taken from us.”
    No worries!

I think they already tried that in Italy in the 30's. From what I hear, there were some problems along the way.

I think Alex's idea is promising. Politicians should be forced to state their objectives and actually be held accountable for failing to achieve them.

I'm pretty disgusted with politics at the moment, our iguana prime minister is trying to introduce a huge carbon tax on the sly.

I would like to see the criminalisation of not voting bought in to Ireland. You have to show up even if you make a protest vote. How does this work in reality?

Also I like the idea of voting polititians out as well as in. That would shake things up!

I think people that are so disinterested in politics that they can't be bothered to vote are people that shouldn't be voting.

Maybe, but they can get off thier disinterested arse holes and show up.
Last election here we got a turn out of 60% and all the comentators were like 'wow what a high turn out'. Bullshit. Everyone should show and the state should be fining those that cant be arsed, maybe make a few quid.
Its a bit of an old chestnut, but I believe we honour those that have sacrificed themselves to give every one (even lazy arse holes) a vote, by turning up and making our mark

These people need to go in and spoil their ballots. At the very least, politicians should be forced to confront the fact that people think they're useless cunts.

Is it really worth it to force everyone to vote when their vote is ill informed and coerced? IMO if you want to increase voting numbers in a way that's actually useful, the key is creating an interest in politics and showing how the things around them are the way they are because of voting.

Vote for mandatory voting this year, and they'll vote to repeal it next year.
