    why does the military teach traditional martial arts like pentjak silat?

    i remember when i had no experience i was impressed by instructors like this but bunch of years later i realize it's all garbage


    why don't they just teach these guys some basic boxing and a mount escape and call it a fucking day?

    If you want an honest reply before someone eats you.

    The military has guns.

    And even if they do martial arts it is very commonly the national martial art (usually a sport art) of whatever nation said army is located in.

    In countries like the USA, and some bullies with military experience may chime in, they do very basic stuff grounded in wrestling and boxing.

    But it is low priority compared to actual military training. In fact I think the idea is just the wrestling is good PT.

    These days we don't have to fight like fucking samurai.

    US Army combatives is primarily BJJ with some (poorly Taught) Muay Thai Clinch work. Army USD is almost all aikido as well as Navy MACH training.
