Yes and he does no-gi BJJ and they focus, from what I understand, on fighting not necessarily self-defense like you. All he asked was about no-gi vs gi.

Then once again if you don't wear a gi and you don't do promotions then why call it BJJ.....call it something else. BJJ practitioners train with a gi, wear belts and get promoted.

Even Eddie Bravo promotes his students using the color system of BJJ and he don't train with a gi. Since you stated you do no-gi BJJ, whatever that is, and you don't promote then it is not BJJ.

Go ask the instructors that teach BJJ and label it Gi or no-gi on their websites, competitions, and seminars.

Show me the websites of who you are talking about. I don't know of any BJJ school that does not promote even though they don't train with a gi. Like I said Eddie Bravo, who does not train with a gi, promotes his students. Even Chirs Brennan, no-gi instructor, promotes his guys using the BJJ belt rank system. There are schools that do both gi and no-gi but they all promote their students.

Can Purple Belts actually promote anyone?

Yes, I realize as a purple belt I should probably know this.

If you would like to argue semantics on what is required to call groundwork BJJ, I am really not the person to do it with. If my claiming BJJ as one of the arts I train offends you, I apologize - but I don't feel it is misleading to do so. If you'd like to evaluate whether or not what I do is BJJ, I'd love to roll anytime you might be in the area. Just bear in mind that even if my school did rank I'd probably still be a white belt.

Whiteshark, maybe you should try and see if it sticks!

Yes you can promote up to blue belt. However you must stick to the belt system from one of the federations to do so. If someone was to open a school and claim it to be BJJ, whether with gi or no gi, you still must have a promotion process in order to be recognized as a legit BJJ school. Now if I ran a MMA school then there is need of ranking but I can't call it a BJJ academy though.

According to the IBJJF you can only do this if there aren't sufficient black belts in your country yet.

I do not tolerate thread drift in the technique fora. Most of you know that already. If you want to discuss something that is off topic, start a new thread.
