2011 Junior Olympics Judo, Irving, TX

Not sure where this belongs, so mod move if not appropriate.

Anyone on board taking their young ones to Irving, TX for the Junior Olympics 22-24 July?

Especially interested in hearing from those in the greater Dallas area, as I have some questions, but it'd be good to meet others while in the neighborhood.

Also interested in any warnings and/or advice past attendees may have to share.

I'll be taking a couple of my students down to this event. You should contact Bert Becerra if you have questions about Dallas. His email and phone number are available on his website: becerrajudo.com

Joe, I won't be going but you should be seeing some amazing competitors. Please let me know how it goes. Warchief, are you affiliated with Texoma Judo in WF?

LOL, I'm from Wichita Falls, was the last member/coach of the Wichita Falls YMCA Judo club before it shut down (when I left WF for grad school).

My step dad still does Judo at Texoma, my two nephews did until about 2-3 years ago.

Is this the thread for me and Ben to go on a rant about why the 'junior olympics' is an abomination that should be stopped asap or is that too harsh.

    @ Warchief - thanks

Need to get the girl a blue gi ASAP.

Didn't get her birth certificate FAXed in time yesterday and have to before she can be entered. Must do Monday as online registration is during working hours only.

Looking forward to this one as she always has to go up in weight or do demos. Kid has never wanted to medal for uncontested. At 15 and 85lbs, there's been no competition at her weight/age bracket for most Oklahoma tournaments.

judoka_uk and Ben - rant as you will. All comments welcomed.

Junior Olympics is what USA Judo calls it's Junior National Championships. My only objection is that they have it for really young kids (born 2005). It's necessary to have it for the IJF Junior and the Cadet (-17) divisons. I can tolerate national championships for kids older than 9, think that -13 is probably as young as they should be run, even better -15, 17, and -20 only.

But, the tournament would not make anyone any money if they ran it the way I would like to see from a developmental standpoint. They bid these things out, and the people who put it on expect to make a profit.

LOL, Warchief, welcome to the insane asylum! John and I had some good talks about Judo while he was visiting our place.

I'm sure you enjoyed the visit and discussions. I'm looking forward to your visitors getting back down here. We miss them. Rumor has it you may be coming down this way for a visit. I hope that works out. I'd like you to see our new dojo and meet the crew. Hopefully, John will finish his vocab review and I can get him tested for Shodan. Stay safe and give a shout if I can do anything for you. Roy
