ok I'll work on it. Can't hurt. We were doing some standing headlock escapes where I end up putting my opponent in a rear naked and another student said to use my left since I escaped from his left. It was just as easy to use my right. He doesn't know anything more than me so I wanted to see if I could just use my stronger arm if it's there.

If you are flat on your back with your opponent back mounted on top of you you need to be able to pull them into "the pocket" on either side. Otherwise when they go away from the choke you have no recourse.
"the pocket" means the arm on bottom that is across their neck.
6:15 in this video shows what I'm talking about with the pocket.
