Because I wanted to be a better fighter, get stronger, and not get beat up by the jocks. Plus I've always been interested in training. My first three goals are roughly the same, even though I've got some build for a string bean.

    (1) I love Judo and (2) so I don't die at my desk at 60.

I train because I was sick of losing the drunken bar fights that I start on a weekly basis.

If I didn't train, it would make me slightly less like Batman, and we can't have that.
    Plus, hittin' dudes is fun.

In all honesty, I train because it's a fun, healthy hobby that sometimes helps me on my job and might help me if I'm attacked by some asshole.

That's "what". The question was "why?".

If this is something about "having them act as one" or some such thing, kindly remember that--no matter how hard you train to "unify" (or whatever) mind, body and spirit--time and fate will sunder them with a cheerful cracking sound, leaving things much as they had been before you started training. All that effort, ended in a happy, agonized crunch.

To avoid this imminent joy is a simple thing: you need only stand before the hoary multitudes, apologize for the wasted time and effort, scoop out your eyes with a tablespoon, set icepicks into your ears and then rip out your own throat, collapsing wetly at last onto your fragrant footwear to the sound of Tiptoe Though The Tulips.

Then, and only then, will the bone-racked, put-upon masses surely know that you will inconvenience them no more.

I train to keep my ageing body in some sort of shape, because i enjoy the social interaction and when my young daughter starts bringing boys home, i want to be able to remind them that her dad does martial arts.
