I train because I saw Nico/Above the Law when I was 17.
I did about 18 months of booj a bit later because I too wanted to to be Sho Kosugi
I'm doing Kali/Eskrima now partly because of a guy that did an AWESOME demo at one of my Aikido courses. (But also partly because I watched Out For Justice when I was 19)
I'm doing Muay Thai this year to get fit, and to learn to fight properly

A lot of good info. I agree, the best self defense is not being there in the first place and getting out of the situation (without altercation) if you are in it. I am a big believer in the fact that physical training does something to make this happen to a degree. That is another reason I like to train. Perhaps it is developing perception, confidence, sensitivity, or whatever. Then, if all else fails, and the bad guys don't allow you to leave, hopefully you have some useful skills to get away and not be dead. You meaning anyone.

I train because I hit three hundred and fifty pounds, and **** that. Plus, Judo is fun. Really god damned fun.
Self defense wise... don't care. Training for self defense is a waste of fucking time for me, because my idea of an awesome time is to get rip-roaring drunk and read shitty japanese comics until three in the morning, putting the probability of my actually seriously needing to fight my way out of a situation I can't avoid, run, or get through roughly around the probability of getting hit in the head by a meteor.
Oddly enough, I still train in Matsuno-ryu Jujitsu, which is all about dat self defense, but that's mainly because I think it's an interestingly different take on roughly the same skillset as Judo. Plus, it's more ukemi practice, and if there's one thing I can't be too good at it's ukemi.

Done the odd bit of MA at times from when I was a kid to recent times, fairly fond of Judo these days (very hands on training. hahah). My reasons for doing it have changed from self defense to keeping fit to because it's a laugh and a half being thrown and/or choked out. Mainly I suspect it's a way for me to keep my mid-life crisis in check - can't afford a red sports car.
Oh, and the bit about eating whatever I want (or near enough to not matter).

I think it would be interesting to see why people DONT train. Although I think this would probably be the worst forum in existence to ask that.
