I started Judo when I was 7 because my parents wanted me to but that didn't last long because some idiot burnt down the training hall.
I then started Karate when I was 10 because it looked cool and I wanted to kick ass. I did it for 4 years.
I found Wing Chun when I was 19 and wanted to be like Bruce Lee and learn self defense.
I left WC at age 24 and started freestyle, a kind of JKD and did that for 5 years because I wanted to kick people in the face.
I went back to Judo just before my 30th because I wanted to learn to grapple like Royce Gracie but there wasnt any BJJ near why I lived but it was short lived because I got seriously injured.
Then aged 37 I started Judo again and now train because I love Judo, I love grappling I love training, I like the guys I train with and wish I stuck with Judo from the get go because learning Judo at my age is not easy. I don't train for self defense but I guess it could come in useful if I needed it but I now live in a tiny Surrey village where crime is non existent so its not an issue.

    This. Plus, fighting is fun.

No rational cost-benefit analysis would support me training for 'self defence'. I've been injured worse and more frequently in training than any likely outcome of the couple of scuffles it's enabled me to 'win'.

Especially as you train BJJ which is a sport and doesn't work on the streets.

When I choke someone in a fight it may look like I'm doing the filthy BJJ 'mata leon', but it's actually use the deadly Judo hadaka jime, passed straight down to me from the battlefields of feudal Japan. Otherwise, obviously, my opponent would rip my balls off.

Yeh, but what do you do if they raise their left big toe and lower their right big toe and their chi flow stops you choking them out, eh?
