Yup. There's a couple of vids I've seen on them where they're going absolutely full-on (well it would appear so), in terms of grappling...

That did not suck. I'm not sure what the rules were for that session, but I liked it. Recognizable aikido/aikijujutsu techniques and -- get this -- short circles. Looks like fun.

I wonder how it would go with someone who had a clue about kumi kata.

Any one read this book? It is the story of a normal gut who learns aikido. It provides a great insight into training and application of the art. Funny too.
It tells how the early protagonists went down the docks to start fights, in order to presure test the techniques they learnt that day.
It also maintains that aikido favours the smaller person. What do aikidoka make of that?

    I've read it.

The problem with the book as evidence of Aikido ever being hard is that those stories of people going "down the docks to start fights, in order to presure test the techniques they learnt that day" are anecdotal. Anecdotal evidence doesn't (and shouldn't) count here.

Did it help me feel better about Aikido's potential? Yes.
Should it do the same for skeptical Bullshido members? No.

As for it favouring the smaller person, I can only agree in as much as it would suit a smaller person better than some other arts. Not that a smaller person would do better at it than a larger person.

I enjoyed the book very much though. I'd also recommend "Thank You and OK - An American Zen failure in Japan".

When life gives you lemons... BLOOD FOR THE BLOOD GOD!!

"what's the best thing about aikido then?"

Maybe it should just be called tkd vs crappling? Cool to see the aikido stuff applied so effectively, even if it is against someone with absolutely no ground defense. Check out that silly putty guard pass at the end!

How come when the Aikidoka grabbed his wrist with both hands the TKD guy ineffectually tried to push him off instead of blasting the Aikidoka's unprotected head with a nice hook? Oh yeah, I remember why! Most TKD sucks.

TKD guy is worried that if he hurts aikido guy to much, aikido guy, might rip off his arm and beat him to death with the soggy end. This also explains why he avoids getting his arm caught and locked by not punching hardly at all. Even when he gets the guy in head lock he just taps him on the head a bit. Man up TKD guy!

Wow as a former TKD'er i feel i have to say that if that guy kicked and did His backspin kick like that in my old class he would get b*tch slapped by my Teacher. He needs to stretch his hips, he only uses the bottom half of his leg to kick, TURN YOUR HIPS OVER GD. Weakest sh*t Ive seen in a while makes me feel sad they hand out BB these days. but i guess my grammar is just as sad!! talking about the first vid btw
