Google vs Facebook is the next great internet content war, imho.

I am half expecting Google to try to buy Facebook, but I'm no acquisitions expert...I don't know if that is feasible, or if Mark would go for it because as any true geek already knows, Google sucks.

Then again, money certainly does not suck.

When Facebook IPOs next year it may be initially valued at $100B.

Hard to believe for a company that had $2B in revenues in 2011.

Watch for the wild out-of-nowhere haymaker from Microsoft's Lync, too. They have been busy positioning themselves in the social/business networking market as well.

Anyone with a brain can see "Like", "+1" and the rest are simply a way of passing search indexing scoring to consumers instead of the complex algorithms used by, for example, Google. The rationale is that people are using more and more time online for social reasons than others (business, purchasing) and FB/Google want to leverage that time and turn it into profit.

This is in line with the "find what your friends like" philosophy that has spurred Facebook's recent marketing expansions (and the obnoxiousness that came with it).

To me this sounds like an extraordinarily bad idea, replacing fair (or as some might argue, very unfair) scoring systems with what is essentially groupthink, but bad ideas and the Internet go together like chun and wooden dummies.

Is it (the potential facebook acquisition) really any different than what happened in 2006 with youtube? I don't think so. Like any layer of social networking, the robust nature of the network is the end user.

Honestly, Google MIGHT buy facebook, but at that point it's going to be so they have a monopoly on social networking too, as their own social network should be up circa next year.

Remember google wave? yup that's the engine.

See this is where I think we disagree based on background.

The internet once performed a great deal of work from a relatively small numbers of end users, so in effect, its overall efficiency has lowered as more people hop on and use it to buy cleanser. OR worse, talk about what cleansers they buy on Facebook, which gets turned into advertising intelligence.

You can't really compare the "robust nature" of social networking with the actual work being done behind the curtain.

That is why they invented Internet 2, to keep at least one global information network work and research-only. Mention Internet 2 to people and watch the drool. It's fun.

The thought of combining your primary search engine with your online social interface is horrifying to me on so many levels. You could joke "haha what are you searching for" but that's not it, as any privacy advocate would tell you.

Maybe it's because none of it is secure....but that's probably just me and my paranoia.
