I once tried to learn martial arts from a book, and I failed. Even with diagrams, you can't really tell what you need to do to improve yourself.
Once example was when a book told me to "stay on the balls of my feet". Yeah, that's technically right. But my problem was that I was elevating my hind foot too high. It was causing my chin to move out farther than my knee and was screwing up my balance. A book can't correct a problem like that.
When I showed up at my gym, my trainer immediately took a look at what I was doing and instantly corrected me. If he didn't, who knows how long I would have been screwing up my stance?
So no, don't learn out of a book, and don't learn from an instructor who learned everything from a book. Learn from a guy has experience and has actually spent time in the ring. -
