Seriously though besides looking cool is there any reason to spend the energy on an ippon style throw in a BJJ tournament?

It takes no less energy to throw someone for ippon then it does to hug their leg or flop on your arse.

    Also you get 2 points.

Landing in side control, knee on belly (+2) or, in rare cases, mount (+4) (e.g. sumi gaeshi).

Because for some people the primary reason for going to a BJJ comp is TO look cool, doing a big throw means they win, even if they end up behind on points.

How many times have you seen people get smashed, reversed and swept trying to do some snazzy pass or "cool" sub? Their buddies all say "bro you lost, but bro, that fuckin cartwheel pass you tried was siiick bro!"

    Sleeves man, sleeves.

In general Judo Gis are less tailored/fitted and therefore easier to grip.

On purpose, even. In the late 70s/early 80s, they were frequently tailored to be almost ungrippable.

Lets just be clear here. If you don't do Judo or aren't very good at Judo you aren't going to be throwing people for ippon in a way that is meaningful in a BJJ comp.

As in BJJ you not only need to throw them flat on their back but also have control with that throw so you either land directly in side control or you remain standing or you finish with knee on belly.

This of course requires a much greater degree of control then possessed by your average kyu grade and indeed many dan grades.
