My mate, who's a bit of a loon, and a Judo 3rd dan, once had someone pull a knife on him in Camden and demand his money. Without thinking about it he grabbed the mugger and threw him as hard as he could with O soto gari and then fucked off.
Definitely not recomended, but it is possible with a good dose of luck.
It was only when he woke up the next day and thought about what he'd done that he realised how close to death he had been. -

I once did a (testing)parachute jump at the army, and I was amazed as I felt time was slowing down...although, at the same time, I really knew I headed down real fast...
On another occasion, I had a car crash, and after the point of no return I already had imaged a few different possiblities of where my car would stop and how... pretty weird. -

So true. Some people exude confidence. One of the guys i do MT with is totally normal. I mean couldnt be any more normal. But he's trained and fought in thailand for six years in his 20's and he just has this look that freaks people out. He's a really great guy , just scary if you dont know him.

Tbh I don't really think about MA in a self-defence context much nowadays, I live somewhere quiet in the country and I'm too old to get into staring contests with drunks in cheesy nightclubs.
I do martial arts for the same reason people take up other rough sports like Rugby. It keeps me healthy and stops me turning into a completely domesticated office-plant.Last edited by Cullion; 6/06/2011 6:50pm at .

Im 21 and i dont get into a lot of fights. There's a total misconception that "the streets" are full of teh danger. Maybe in some areas but just stay the hell away from them. The closest i got to an altercation in the past year was 5 guys restraining a friend who had bumped into me and kicked off. They apologised and told me no one wanted any trouble and their friend was a dickhead.
