Yep that's what I also meant. Using an Atemi BEFORE going for a lock or takedown.

Self Critical, I'm aware of the inner workings of a sapu, but I can assure you, you definitely you need some sort unbalancing FIRST to get the sapu working. And one effective way of disturbing the balance is hitting, which has the added advantage that it can stun an opponent for a short time.

How many times are people going to move the goalposts to "well if you stun him by punching/kneeing/calling in an airstrike first these throws work". I bet if I smashed a bottle over his head first I could win a fight by gooch bomb, that doesn't mean throwing my gooch around is a martial art.

True, but at the same time, some moves need setting up, that's true for any art.
