Sammy doesn't get enough credit, because most people aren't familiar with Montrose, with their self-titled being as good as anything Van Halen put out and the primary influence on VH's sound.
Aside from that, Sammmy vs DLR is like a debate as to which is better, being a kid and your parents come home with one of those big ass cans of Ecto-Cooler, or being a kid and your uncle comes home and tells you your parents died in a car crash on the way to buy you Ecto Cooler. VH's decline in quality was hardly all Sammy's fault though.

I agree totally; Montrose rocked, and I followed Sammy's solo-career as well. I enjoyed Van Halen's early work, but IMHO, Sammy was what put them over the top.
