We went to the opening (free) night of Marrie Monarch. Here is Hula Kane (men) dancing the battle Pele lost, fire against water... this isn't pretty girls in grass skirts smiling at the tourists, this is warrior dance.

Lynyrd Skynyrd - original - 1975 shown on BBC2's "The Old Grey Whistle Test". We never had BBC2 in our house at that time :-(

Anyway, they played a set especially for the BBC's OGWT and it was repeated this past weekend. Rather good :-)

Was listening to Westside Connection's Terrorist Threats the other day on my way home from work, rounded the corner and noticed Ice Cube sitting at a cafe. Now, this is Sydney, Australia and I had no idea he was here because I'm not up to date on the hip hop scene/ concert schedule. So naturally I assumed I was a conceited racist for thinking that a black man looked like Ice Cube while I was listening to Ice Cube. Keep in mind I have been a Cube fan since NWA in the 80s (I didn't have a clue why they were "runnin'", nor did I understand how far "100 miles" actually was, cause I was 5 years old, but I LOVED it nonetheless), so after a double take to ensure I wasn't a racist I shouted, "CUBE!" and stood with my arms outstretched like so many of those goddamn Latino gangster poses I have seen on the streets of LA (on the TV). Here I am, whitey, in a pose that could possibly be some gang sign for "bring it" with Gangsta Nation blaring in my ear, ending up shaking hands with Ice Cube going, "man, I'm listening to you right now!" and him probably thinking, "goddamn it, peckerwood, get out my business".

EDIT: Getting ready for a fun gig Friday an hour north of here. Soaking up some good ol' Southern Rock, and country, to add to the blues/reggae set we're doing.

Tonight it's the rock/country, tomorrow I'll be on soul duty. Gotta get my Marvin Gaye, Al Green and Teddy.
