Ten miles from Pahoa at the end of the road in Kalapana (lava covered the road and 185 houses) is Uncle Robert's Kava Bar. On Wednesdays we head out there for Night Market. Lots of venders, all sorts of food, beer and songs like this one (and reggae and rock [Prince song one night with wailing guitars] and whatever the guys want to play). Picnic tables under big tarps, it's been gradually getting more and more of a scene. Uncle Robert and family keep it sane (loud music from idiots in parking lot are told, "this is our house, go to your house if you want.") and politically correct ("This isn't about money, this isn't about violence, this is about community, malama kekahi i kekahi, taking care of each other, , aloha, and establishing Lawful Hawaiian Government). Last week, Puna, one of Uncle's sons died, and the stage / alter was covered with pictures and posters and flowers, including a bud covered pot plant. It's a different world, they are the remnant Hawaiian civilization, way out on the fringes, and it's another world, one I'm proud to be a part of.
