In many ways its like being trained by Superman. Neither Machida or Bas Rutten is going to be able to stop a bullet with his eyeball, however many times Superman demonstrates it.
Seagal's eyes are way harder (alt. piggier) than Superman's

Big Poppa Seagal teaches Machida his deadly stuff

"Isn't the top of the head one of the hardest parts of the body?" I think its that the forehead is the hardest part of the body, so you can generally take a punch there no problem and if its bare knuckle, it will hurt the other guy much more. The very top of the head though has a soft spot I think.

Still, I'm surprised Machida was able to find something both legal and useful there. I thought 12o'clock to 6o'clock elbows were illegal, but it could be only if they are downward, eg. from mount, not from off your back, as I've seen them done off the back in UFC without anyone getting in trouble.
Isn't deliberately striking the opponents eye illegal? Even if it is legal, that kind of thing could probably detach a retina.

Their phrasing is "Striking downward using the point of the elbow". I think technically speaking, the elbow to the head from the guard is traveling horizontally. The intent, I believe, is to avoid elbow strikes that make full use of bodyweight and gravity against someone who's against an anvil (the mat). A fighter elbowing from guard doesn't really have those conditions.

"Eye gouging of any kind" is illegal, but a strike is a little different. I don't know if you could outright ban striking the eye in a sport where you're allowed to hit each other in the face. "no eye gouging" seems prudent enough.

In one of the vids with Anderson Silva, SS is showing him some sort of 'eye clap' technique (i.e. slam both palms into the opponent's eyes, hard). Can't remember whether he demonstrated it on Silva or not (might've been Machida if he was there) - but the result seemed to be pain and disorientation.

Whether it would actually work, or be high percentage enough (suspect not) to be worth trying in a full-fight is another matter, of course.

Honestly I wasn't too shocked to see the karate kicks to the face appear in the octagon, but I'm not holding my breath to see a Steven Seagal double eye clap being used successfully there.

Perfect example of the "guru complex". No different really than the political and spiritual ones of the 1960's. These "masters" come out of the woodwork to offer an "experienced" insight into something that has already far surpassed their skill at (I'm sure) a steep price. At least JCVD will be stepping into the ring in BKK this November against an Olympic gold medalist boxer. Muay Thai (minus elbows) rules. No elbows because Jean Claude doesn't want to mess up his million dollar face... has he not seen that giant lump on his forehead? WTF is that anyway, ego?
