The downside is it's a rare 1000 year old weapon for a reason. I doubt very many people were able to ever master/use it effectively (doesn't mean there weren't some 3 sectional staff killers, though...)
I liked Gene's assertion that the weapon is basically designed to hurt you if you aren't careful with it, but it won't, say, take off a finger or anything. A weapon that says "hey idiot, stop swinging me like a fool".
Go look for Omega's staff demo (sorry I'm too lazy atm)...it's hard for even the biggest skeptic to deny/critique that sort of agility when you see it first hand. And throw away the weapon...that agility and strength is still there in your hands.
It's the Riddle of Steel and all that...it's not the weapon that makes the hand stronger, it's the hand that makes the weapon strong.
And he didn't just pick that **** up anywhere. He spent time at it to the point where it seems as easy as a child twirling a toy, but you would not want to meet the business end of the weapon.
Learning to wield a heavy weapon seemed so unnatural for me at first it's still hard to imagine getting to a point where the weapon and you are really one continuous thing (I certainly don't have that kind of skill, but there is plenty of video evidence of those who do).

Once upon a time, let's say around 10 or so years ago, still training in Aikido, not yet a student of Judo - I used to think that CMA weapons training was THE ****.
Today - I still think CMA weapons training is the ****, but for a very different reason, and it's entirely related to Wrabbits last post.
Trivia: a long long time ago, I uploaded a video of myself swinging Nunchaku like a beast to the bullshido archive. Extra points if you can find the video.
The reason I still like CMA weapons training, is exactly that - for the TRAINING.
Although it can be argued that certain weapons (ie Nunchaku) have potential to literally wear out your joints, the benefits of said training (increases in dexterity, agility, and muscular endurance) are difficult to dispute.
