I think A, B, and C sum these up nicely. I'd like to vote in a poll too. Absent any thread change, I'm voting for C as the base component of all choke KO's with a possibility of the others contributing in rare circumstances. (underwater maybe?)

    Carotid chokes work because of

    A. No blood gets to the brain thereby cutting of oxygen to the brain and causing a KO.
    B. The vagas nerve is stimulated, dropping BP and oxygen to the brain, thereby causing a KO
    C. The flow of blood out of the brain is restricted causing a pressure difference that causes a KO.

These are simple summaries of 3 theories we have up feel free to add if I missed one.

I feel nobody had read my posts (with videos and medical papers included).... except Snake (but he doesn't count). Is an AHDH epidemy running wild there or what?

Your last source is in French. I'm sorry but I don't speak much French.

Oops I did miss your videos though.

I definitely agree with you that the action of baroreceptors is a major component of what Josh is looking for. A rapid nervous response (combined with the sudden loss of blood pressure) aligns with the observable physical symptoms caused by the applied choke well, right?

While fun, wouldn't this be a little pointless as non of us really have any understanding of the science behind the process or any method of testing it.

It would basically be us guessing.

I think we can come to an educated decision based on experience, knowledge and logic to prove or disprove a theory common to martial arts training. No one has come on and said yes without a shadow of a doubt here is why it happens here is the absolute proof AND can answer any question that arises regarding their facts.

I am simply offering theories to be shot down to come to a rational answer to a question that I have. This is not about being right or wrong but about learning something together.

In case you haven't noticed I am bored at work and these exercises are keeping me entertained. Its the end of the year and students are working on projects so I just walk around going "Looks good keep going."

Don't you think a lot of people would find the science easy to follow? It doesn't have to be a hardcore study of nomenclature.

    - Blood carry oxygen

    - Brain need oxygen to stay awake.

    - Push on nerves/arteries, slow blood down, make blood bad

    - Brain go sleep

    - Pulse rise, brain wake up happy.

Strangulation and it's effects on the body has been heavily researched, there doesn't seem to be any lack of source material.

I also don't see why it needs to be tested.
