unfortunately i'm in tokyo and didn't get to go watch (poor me)"Face punches are an essential character building part of a martial art. You don't truly love your children unless you allow them to get punched in the face." - chi-conspiricy
"When I was a little boy, I had a sailor suit, but it didn't mean I was in the Navy." - Mtripp on the subject of a 5 year old karate black belt
"Without actual qualifications to be a Zen teacher, your instructor is just another roundeye raping Asian culture for a buck." - Errant108
"Seriously, who gives a **** what you or Errant think? You're Asian males, everyone just ignores you, unless you're in a krotty movie." - new2bjj -

I think the problem with American Judo can be attributed in a small way to cost of membership. I went to enroll my son in a literal garage facility, and was asked for over $300 up front. I was taken aback and did not sign him up. The facility was a GOOD facility, and they were active in local tournements, but the cost is crazy. I guess my point is, many dojos are operating, but are forced to charge high rates to stay afloat in the American economy.

Your experience is not the norm. Most Judo dojo in the US operate as clubs with volunteer instructors, in rented space, and with very low fees. My first club was a nonprofit that only charged $40 a month for unlimited access to three Judo classes and two BJJ classes taught by a black belt every week. The only places I've heard that can get away with high fees are either run by someone with high level competition experience or in areas with high property values.
