I studied Sun hang do for a year; it is a korean based mixed martial art. The grand master is amazing (though starting to show his age) and a couple of the schools are very good, however the curriculum (and website) changed recently; it is now leaning towards becoming a McDojang. It is an excellent blend of several arts, but they're beginning to tier the classes, ie "regular", "black belt club" and "master club" and are becoming rather elitist and exclusive. The art itself is good, and IMHO quite close to complete, incorporating weapons, grappling, hard kicks and strikes as well as softer redirection and joint manipulation, board breaking, gymnastics, etc. But while local independant martial arts instructors used to lose students to SHD, more and more people are now LEAVING shd as prices increase. If you have the money, it is worthwhile trying it out. But be aware that the junior instructors are trained to have you sign up for the basic classes, and then upgrade you at a later date.

Everyone knows BJJ is the only complete art out there anyway, since 11 out of 10 fights go to the ground in the first -1 seconds, it's imperative that you learn to jump guard for a street self-defense situation because there's no chance you could ever make a fighting retreat or beat 1.5 guys coming at you at the same time.

Right every fight goes to the ground and BJJ is the only complete art...

WTF are you spouting on about, you deranged little boy?

Wake up and smell the combat reality. It is not BJJ.

You realized you just mocked something someone said 3 years ago...

    Get a clue.

I have also studied this art for a year as well. Even though I agreed that sometimes they are trying to get you upgrade to their black belt club they do teach really well. For example I am 240 pounds when I joined and they taught how to successfully do handsprings and other gymnastic moves which was thought to be impossible for someone my weight and the way they train can really strengthen your body. A lot of their junior instructors are very skillful as well like the one in my dojo he could take 4 guys his age or a bit younger at once still manage evading many attacks in a sparring match. So unless they actually start making up expensive bs clubs i don't think this martial art should be in any bs forums.

The website said the grandmaster started off in Chang Moo Kwan, which was one of the major schools of martial arts in post occupation Korea that was merged into TKD. It goes on to say he was a TKD instructor for a while.

I'd have to agree, it's probably just TKD with some crappling and basic kobudo thrown in.

Since they make so many claims to be a "complete martial art" and there's also alot in there about self defense and fighting, I'd say it's probably a candidate for bullshido, can't say for sure till we see a class.

McDojo maybe, the fact that they have a black belt club in the form of an association is not a good sign.

I have been in Sun Hang Do for 8 years. I left because at my current level, it was getting way to expensive for me. THen my instructors were giving me ways to stay, but in the end, I was not interested NOR they did not give me a good enough deal.

Personally, Sun Hang Do is a good martial art. The only way you are ever going to progress in this martial art, is to work hard and make sure you have a steady job to afford practically $100 bucks a month. Now, there is a reason why it costs so much, its because they use alot of sponsers and they have to keep ther dojang running in order to serve YOU better, yeah I know, its a pain, but its life.

When I recieved my 1st Dan Black Belt, I automatically was in the black belt club, this helped me learn even more of my basics AND also gave me some more days to train for FREE, of course the price went down, but only 20%. But be cautious and listen to every word they say when they mention the contracts, trust me you DONT wan tto screw up and end up hating them, ive learned this the hard way.

In conclusion, I am still not happy with the way I had to leave and I will never be going bck there, I do not have the desire nor the patience to carry on its legacy, so I wish you guys the best of luck when joining and have fun :), they are good people.

    See yaz bye.

Another thing that you guys should be aware of is, they keep chaning thier damn patterns over and over and over again, so if you are on the old system, quickly learn as fast as you can and get the testing out of the way, otherwise you just wasted a few hundread bucks.

lol no response I guess, well whoever wants to join Sun Hang Do, I wish them the best of luck, but be careful of the prices and watch the contracts CAREFULLY, otherwise you will be stuck paying a little more then you bargain for. However, the instructors will go over this with you as well.

Once again, good luck and enjoy :).
