Of course and that isn't the point. You have a modicum of skill that will degrade, but isn't even in the same realm as the OP. The OP is shocked because, he got smoked and he was home trained. In other words he is untrained and no matter the art zero training is going to lose to coached training most of the time.
Fixing poor mechanics is completely different than incorrectly learned mechanics. You will relearn and progress faster than doing the full dump this guy is going to do if he ever gets to a real gym.Last year, due to several different issues, I wasn't able to train with my normal routine from April-November. I wasn't able to go to the gym or make it to our group training session. I worked out at home lifting, working the bag, mat drills, kata, etc.
In December, when I was able to start getting back with my normal training group, it showed. Despite having years of training in different styles, I've pretty much spent the past couple of months unworking the poor mechanics that I trained into myself while not having proper supervision. The hood mentality is crippling disease, that attacks your nervous system. It makes you nervous of the system. Gangsters and hood rats are especially susceptible to this growth stunting mentality. The hood is where I'm from, but it's not what I am. In music, until you hit big, sometimes your band will be judged by the caliber of band you've opened for. In martial arts, real-world readiness can sometimes relate to the caliber of martial artist who has bested you (on the regular).
I've been owned by so many talented people, in a determined and thorough manner, in the past, that normal untrained, or out of training (unarmed) people just aint got it. These things stay with me, though I'm not nearly as sharp as when I managed 2-3 days a week in gym.
Be proud of who's owned you, as it will make it that much harder, for some str33t jackass to surprise you, with what they do. Building a martial instinct involves reacting to failure in the immediate, in a positive, and forward-looking way.
I'm not a threat to anyone in the ring/cage, but in life-in-general, I feel as safe as one is likely to, being in my position. -
