    Cage Academy/Team Elite Wilmington, NC

This place has recently come to my attention in Wilmington, NC. I lack the MMA expertise to make too many judgments about quality but something just seems "off" and I'm not sure of the instructors' qualifications. Anyone here heard of these people?

The portly chap doing the kata guruma apparently is a Sifu. Also, the Elite Fighting Systems page claims that they have the best record in NC. I wonder if this is even true or if it is it's because they're fighting ill trained jackasses in nightclub cage fights at the Rox which may or may not be sanctioned.

Fight videos here for experienced evaluation.

I have seen Team Elite fighters in sanctioned events here in NC. Their claim of having the best record in NC is a bit dubious, however. IIRC, none of their fighters are ranked as the #1 in their weight class, nor do they have any pro fighters, or a super-long track record.

Also, don't diss the Sifu-MMA instructors, for being Sifus. There are several in NC, who are doing quite well, thank you.

You misunderstand me, I was making fun on the fact that he was fat and he's supposedly a sifu. As in MORBIDLY OBESE and supposedly a sifu. MMA instructors, Kung Fu guys, Kaju guys can call themselves sifu all they want, I don't particularly care and I respect the title. The King Kong Bundy looking dude pro wrestling slamming people is hilarious to me.

Thank you for the additional information. Any idea on qualifications of their teachers?

Ah gotcha; mock morbid obesity at will. As for the quality of their teachers, I can't really comment. Some of their fighters win, and some of them lose.

Being morbidly obese does not constitute fraud. What exactly are your allegations here? Don't ask other people to do the leg work you are too lazy to do. BTW, you list four different styles for yourself. How often do you train?

I didn't make any allegations, per se, I questioned if anyone had heard of these guys and if they were qualified since they didn't post any qualifications and their website seemd just a little off. Since it seems they produce fighters that at least win then I guess they at least produce something that somewhat works. So I guess my question was somewhat answered, case closed. I didn't ask anyone to do any legwork, I asked if anyone had heard of these guys or happened to know if they had any qualifications or at least something of a reputation in NC since many bullies live in NC. Apparently they win some, and lose some and as SifuJason said their claim of being the best in NC is a little suspect but that could well be puffery and not really fraud. If that's the case, I don't particularly care what they teach anymore.

As for the style question, I trained fencing for three years in college and used to help my coach teach beginners and was gunning for Assistant Moniteur status until school got in the way and never earned it. I practice on my own two hours a day, every day but Sunday when I wake up and Mondays and Wednesdays I train Judo. Tuesdays and Thursdays I used to train Capoeira but my teacher lost his job and now lives in Arizona. So I'm kind of in a holding pattern right now waiting to move so I can find a martial arts school I can train at on a consistent basis. Being a bit of a martial slut as I haven't lived in an area with a striking style I want to train hardcore and would find fun. I'm not a black belt in anything, though I hope to get a judo shodan one day.

I also should say that since I have no knowledge of MMA I wanted to see if certain eyebrow-raising things on their site went with actually bad MMA. Since an NC bully was kind enough to point out some things I will defer to his expertise on something I know very little about. If I was mistaken to use this forum to question qualifications or see if there were poor standards going on, which I thought was under the sticky when I read it, I sincerely apologize. If this looks aboveboard to MMA folks and they win I could care less about their "lineage" as they don't claim to teach anything specific like "Brazilian Jiu-jitsu" where lineage is important and just claim to teach generic MMA.

Where are you moving to? Staying in NC? If so, there is good stuff in the triangle and the triad.

Yes, this irks people. Still people do get fat and if he produces winning fighters his look does not matter his credentials and teaching do. If you want to laugh I'll move this to YMAS. If not, get to researching and pay attention to the rules of each sub-forum.

Since nothing I've found turned up anything fraudulent, and SifuJason mentioned that their fighters win occassionally outside of the nightclub unsanctioned fight I've seen, but plenty of humorous things are present, please go ahead and move this to YMAS and I'll be more careful next time.
