That definition for martial art sucks. Are wrestling, boxing, pankration, Capoeira, Kampfringen, and lua not martial arts because they're not oriental? Are Kendo, Iaido, Kobudo and Yarijutsu not martial arts because they use weapons and aren't unarmed?

Just today I saw a doctor who was telling me about a patient of his who taught wrestling. He specifically said, "he is a wrestler, so not a martial artist".

I think for most people, to be a "martial artist" you absolutely MUST wear pajamas of some kind.

It happens everywhere. The reason Capoeira has colored ropes for rank was to make it more like Eastern Martial arts and more acceptable to the government and public as karate and jiu-jitsu were as opposed to something the poor and the underclass and dangerous criminals did. It also increased perception of it as a "real" martial art rather than as a criminal fighting art.
