One-legged wrestler wins NCAA title, What's Your Excuse?

Arizona State's Anthony Robles, a one-legged wrestler, defeats defending champion for Div. I title

For Anthony Robles, it was the perfect ending to the perfect season.

The Arizona State wrestler born with one leg ended his undefeated season with the crown on Saturday, defeating the defending champ Matt McDonough of Iowa, 7-1.

"My coaches prepared me well," Robles said after taking the 125-pound weight class title. "We've been working all year and the past few years on quick draws, quick stick... I couldn't have done it without him. I felt super confident out there and it was a team effort. I want to thank my training partners and my family for supporting me and it wasn't just me out there. I was doing it for all them, too. It feels great to be a national champion."

That's pretty damn amazing. Looks like there's a movie coming out too.

PS - favorite quote from the comments "so much for a one legged man in an ass kicking contest"

This might be an asshole move on my part, but he's in the 125 pound division and a leg accounts for 1/7 of body weight, right? So that means the rest of his body belongs around 140 to 145 pounds, right? I'm not sure if his lack of a leg is a benefit or a curse for wrestling.

    Seriously, though... nicely done.

I think the missing limb, and the resulting lack of mobility and leverage outweigh (snicker) the benefits of having the additional muscle mass. Interesting trivia: nobody got a double leg takedown on this guy his entire career.

On topic, watch some of his videos - there are links all over youtube. Robles is amazing with his control, agility and speed.

Very good point, but I can't think of a limb that I would sacrifice to put me at a false weight advantage (since in the end, I'm the same weight anyways) in wrestling or kickboxing, unless I can somehow fight without a head.

If you watch pro Arm Wrestling from places like russia you'll see a ton of guys with one leg competing. And their other leg is scrawny. and their upper body is enormous.

I'm going to make sure I have a kid with only one leg and make him wrestle his ass off. There has to be one every generation.
