BTW, this would be a judo tournament. Coming up first weekend in April, held in the West Ed mall, they lay mats down over the skating rink. Will be my first experience with an international level tournament, plus getting ogled by tourons.

I was going to attend, however, my wife reminded me that my 5 year old son's birthday is that weekend. So needless to say, I cancelled my plans to travel to sunny Edmonton.

I am sending two students, though, who will be competing.

Sorry I'll miss the chance to (maybe) meet you.

Looks like I lucked out - there's going to be 6 in my division, the biggest of the veteran divisions. Four of us are ikkyu, one sandan, one godan. The only one I know is the godan, I've lost to him before.

Good luck, I'll be sitting this one out. My two -20 men students will be leaving in the morning.

Nearly 600 signed up according to the website, they probably still haven't finished entering all the data. Looking forward to it!

Lost both my fights, but in my defense I had a tough draw. First match was against the eventual winner, who was 3 dan and merged into our category from the next youngest. He caught me with o-uchi-gari about 2 minutes in. Second was against a 6 dan guy from England who's on their national masters squad. Tough old bugger, couldn't get past his grips. Thought I throw him for yuko but they gave that point to him and that was the loss. Nearly caught him on the ground but he escaped.

Anyways, great experience and a fun tournament - recommended. As a bonus, the other guy from my dojo got 2nd in his division, so he had a good day.

Thanks! Our club is recreational so the weird thing is the only time I get to go hard is at tournaments. Then I'm reminded of how much I need to work on grips, which is something we just don't do at our club. Wish I had time to do some training at the YMCA club where we've got Ewan Beaton coaching. He knows a thing or two about competitive judo.

Yes, Ewan could update you on kumi kata for sure. You should make time to go there.

One of my students got a bronze in -20 men -66 kg, so we are pretty happy about that.
