If you are a beginner in BJJ you should be working on fundamental techniques. The gogoplata is NOT a fundamental technique.

When I first started doing grappling I used to always try to find some low percentage move that would give me an edge, until Omega told me to stop being a retard. Like JNP said, stick to perfecting your basics.

Its amazing to me that this is so simple when BJJ is being discussed but as soon as you substitute the word BJJ with Judo and the word gogoplata with an equivalent Judo technique, then you get an 8 page **** storm.

Gogo is a great distraction/option to make them unclench their arms when you're on top about to armbar them. A quick switch should switch the soft part of your leg with the bony shin part, resulting in an almost immediate relaxation of the grip, which you can then finish without too much trouble.

Other than that, 'a great submission for people you brutally outclass'

    YMMV

I agree with the prior posts, although I will also admit that I've used it from time to time with some success, but mostly as a lead up to a straight armbar. I've generally hit it, or at least tried it, from the cowboy (aka saddle) mount and then waited to see where they put their arms. If they go one arm in between my legs, it's a triangle. If both then I overhook one and look into a gogo as bait and see how they react, all the while thinking the armbar is far more likely.

If you're REALLY a dick who likes to flaunt your superiority over some total noob, you can also pull the dreaded Sorcerer from the cowboy mount as they try to roll you over. But yeah, now we're talking about going from a low percentage move (the mounted gogo) to a REALLY low percentage move. But you DO get bonus a-hole points for it, so keep that in mind as a plus.

TL;DR you've got the right idea in looking for the mounted triangle, or gift wrap to arm triangle etc, and leave the mounted gogo alone, at least for now.

Did you just say "Judoka are persnickety weenies" or "BJJ guys don't understand the nuance of technique"?

Neither. That when an experienced BJJ person tells someone that a technique is too complicated for them and to stick to the basics that's usually /thread. When an experienced Judo guy does this it turns into a massive battle with people who are ungraded telling people who are 3rd degree black belts with 30 years experience, that they're wrong.

Anyway sorry for the de-rail JNP.

Those who contribute productively the most have the most latitude given to them. Consequently, you and BKR can run through here screaming and naked as far as I'm concerned.

That's an expression, rather than an invitation, by the way.

LOL, a video of myself and Judoka_UK running naked would shut down the Interwebz for sure! Talk about Mutt and Jeff!
