    Knee swelling

    Has anyone experienced knee swelling after working out? There is very little pain that accompanies the swelling, it just feels stiff. Any suggestions on what this is from?

    It is only my right knee and it happens anytime I do something like squats or lunges and to a lesser extent, when we work knees on the heavy bag. The swelling generally last a couple of days. By the time it starts to subside, that is about the time we doing something in class that starts the swelling again.

    There is no actual pain that accompanies the swelling, just stiffness. If I had pain, I would have already gone to see a doctor. I was just checking to see if anyone here has experienced anything similar.

    edit: In my original post when I said "very little pain" I was strickly referring to the stiffness. Other than the stiffness, there is no pain.

    Try icing your knee after you work out, it's a cheaper solution then going to a Dr.

    Icing after a workout definitely works, but make sure you look at your form in squats and when you knee the heavy bag.

    Bad squat form can easily be responsible for chronic knee injury, as can kneeing with the top of the knee joint without proper flexion.

    My NONPROFESSIONAL ADVICE:

    Take some NSAIDS (standard paracetamol/ibuprofein), Ice it, Stretch the IT band, the calf and the quads, go see a doctor and insist that you see a physiotherapist. What part of the knee is it that is swollen? Is it the big meaty tendon running from the knee cap to the shin (Patella tendon)?

    You dont want to keep making it swell up after every training, because eventually it may become a chronic problem and that stuff is a pain in the ass. You need to fix whatevers wrong with your biomechanics thats making it swell, and that can be done via stretching and physiotherapy.

    In my experience most GP's dont know much about sports injurys, most physical injurys they deal with will be from elderly patients falling over, so don't take their word as gospel. You know your own body, if they tell you to just rest and ice it, but you dont feel rest and ice will fix the problem, tell them.
