    Rodney King MMA record

Does anyone know if Rodney King of CMD (not the one that took the cop beatdown) has fought MMA.

I recently started a class and during discussions the guy taking the class was telling one of the other guys how good Rodney was...but I've never seen anything and my google fu produced nothing.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Just in short ... your Google Fu must be incredibly weak.

I find it confusing that Rodney King (Of cop beatdown fame) has also been involved in boxing. Whenever I try to look up one I have to sift through results from the other.

I don't train with him, but I've done a seminar.

Don't think he ever fought competively in MMA, back in the day there were no MMA tournaments in South Africa. He started boxing when under Willy Toweel when he was 16 (a very well known and respected boxing coach in SA), and did some competitive Mauy Thai in Thailand AFAIK.

In terms of his skill though, he is really good - he is a BJJ blackbelt (might be second Dan now), and is known as the father of MMA in South Africa. Even though he pretty much despises the current macho MMA scene in SA, everyone talks about him with great respect.

His system Crazy Monkey Defense (stupid name IMO), is fairly simple to learn, but pretty solid IMO. I saw guys go from total sparring newbs to being able to handle themselves in full sparring against experienced opponents in said 2 day seminar.

In the mid-90's his "Street Tough" gym was known for breeding some of the toughest, meanest street fighters in Johannesburg. Currently one of his fighters, Costa Ioannou, is the undefeated reigning lightweight champ in EFC - the premier MMA league in SA.

You should elaborate a little bit. Full sparring meaning full contact? What was the background of the "experienced opponents?

My coach was one of Rodney's original students at the "street tough" gym when Rodney was still a blue belt in bjj. I've heard a lot of stories about how hard they would train back then. None of them train this way anymore, though.
If you want a comparison, imagine the Chute Boxe mentality. There were often knockouts in sparring. I can imagine beginners doing full contact sparring there within their first month, but I also imagine they were the ones mostly getting knocked out.

I've heard many different things about Rodney. But the one thing that is always the same is that people say he is a great coach who can make anyone better.

I started full contact within the first month at Rodney's gym. Got my bell rung a few times but it was a very quick learning curve.

Sorry, that doesn't answer the OP's question. Just thought I'd vouch for class intensity. It's aliveness all the way.
