    Hell yeah! Hell no!

My coach has seen the light!

So as you can see from my style field, I do JJJ. This year we've really been pushing for more alive training (we're a university club, so it's run by students and not by the coach). Apparently our wish has been granted. Two whole weeks of Sport Jujitsu, with our coach basically letting us go as hard as we want, with more later on in the term. I think we're gonna do some groundwork next week. I'm so happy.

Any other TMAers had success in introducing more alive training at your clubs?

Tell me about it, even the MT guys hardly ever spar, and yet somehow always dominate the other unis they compete with, which means that it must be even worse elsewhere.

Has your coach actually ever done any proper sparring? Does he know how to safely run a sparring session? Do you have the correct safety gear for striking sparring?

I mean getting shitty JJJ, 90% of JJJ is ****, to actually spar is great, because it will help with realism. However, throwing a bunch of people who've only ever trained shitty JJJ into a sparring situation without proper supervision or equipment means a tard-fest and people getting hurt.

Yeah he used to kickbox so he knows how to strike decently. Though I will admit the gear isn't as good as it could be. We've got 12oz gloves, headgear, pretty thin shin pads and dipped foam foot-pads. It's not that much of a problem since most of the guys training don't want to go too hard, and those who do (me and two other guys) have had some outside striking experience.

I'm currently at college too and my school has a few clubs I'm interested in. But I don't know if they cost anything or not (kind of on a budget at the moment). Hopefully I can get a hold of the clubs and see what they've got. MAYBE it'll be free :D

College clubs are generally super duper cheap, normally not free but really cheap.

That sucks your university is so lame about allowing contact in martial arts. I spent five hellish years with the Penn State Judo team wishing we did LESS randori.

PSU Coach Oishi could make the Bataan Death March look like a Boy Scout day hike.

Yeah Judo always seems to be the exception, though it's not so much my university as JJJ in general. That said, the uni won't allow us to set up a boxing club for love nor money (too violent apparently??).

A university without a boxing club is just sucky. Seriously sucky.

Try making the point that your uni has probably had a boxing club in its past, and that it is significantly less dangerous and violent than rugby.
