I was quite impressed with the way Pouillart took the matter to one of the head guys in the FFJDA--and in France Judo is pretty serious business--and then took the time to reply in a personal letter. Although I offered him the option of replying in French if he so desired, he apologetically replied in "rusty English" that was better than that written by many Americans. I've written back thanking him for his reply:

M. Pouillart,

I received your letter today and posted its contents online to let interested parties know that you did not award any martial arts rank to David Lang and that in fact you do not even know him. Thank you—and M. Janicot—very much for taking the time to address the issue so thoroughly and to set the record straight.

It might interest you to know that David Lang also claimed to have been awarded a black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. That claim was proven false when the man who was supposed to have given him the rank was tracked down in Brazil and—like yourself—let it be known that he had not awarded Lang any rank and did not even know him. Due to mounting pressure from internet discussion of his dubious credentials, Lang was forced to close the doors of his martial arts school.
