Batman: Knightfall- **** gets real in this one. It is not only one of the most badass Batman stories out there (Bane is probably my favorite villain due mostly to this), but it has a great look at Batman's psychology as he is pushed to his limit. Probably my favorite Batman story, and I've read Dark Knight Returns, Year One, Long Halloween, etc.

Also, I gotta back up Watchmen (awesome story with great undertones of philosophy and psychology) and Ex Machina (super unique angle with great political commentary).

Kabuki is a pretty different from Alan Moore stuff or Sandman and stuff like that since it's kinda more personal expression made into comic form... which I guess some people find overly artsy or whatever, but I love it. Plus Kabuki, Scarab, Tiger Lilly and especially Akemi and the various ex-agents Kabuki encounters are all awesome characters.
This^^^ plus the artwork is so unique
