    Hell yeah! Hell no!

    Stupid system...

So I want to fight in a judo competition in September if I can get good enough...

Little problem: where I am, the divisions are either weight or rank based but not both. So I could enter the white belt division and end up fighting someone 50kg heavier (I know female heavyweights are rare but they're not nonexistent) or I could enter by weight and end up fighting a black belt (I'm not even graded right now).

This is where people start saying stupid things like 'but you're really strong, you can beat bigger people'. Yep, I also have a tiny skeleton, weak joints that are prone to dislocating, and rotator cuffs that probably don't merit the name, especially my right one since that shoulder has been subluxed and dislocated before. I stopped trying to use certain throws such as the major hip throw even on lighter people because they pull at said crappy rotator cuff...now translate that to trying to move someone much heavier.

I'm thinking entering by rank rather than weight is the best choice though, since there are some advantages to being small and slithery, but no advantages to having less skill and experience. I'm thinking I'll simply do some exercises in the meantime to strengthen my crappy joints, get as strong and technical as possible, and enter the white belt division...

Just thought I'd ask some of you people who actually have experience...Thoughts? Do you think I'm being stupid?

Welcome to competing in Judo as a girl.

Tough luck on being born a woman I'm afraid. Not much to be done about it.

Are you a white belt, though? If so I would be very surprised if you have to fight a black belt.

No responsible tournament organiser would allow a white belt to fight a black belt, especially a much bigger black belt.

Don't feel too badly, I haven't fought in my grade yet. Didn't have a choice, got divvied up by weight and thrown in with brown and black belts in my only two shiai. It's not so bad.

    Yep I'm a white belt.

Thanks for replies. Do you think I'd be safe entering by rank or should I go with weight and hope I don't end up against someone with much more experience?

Grade, just in case the tournament director is a moron.

If they try to merge you with the heavyweights or black belts say no and ask for your money back.

You're in Ireland right? If it's not a national comp, your main problem is going to be that there will be nobody for you to fight.

Also, in my last competition I was up against a guy who out weighed me by more than 50kg (literally, we checked) and I'm still alive - so how bad?

Yep I'm from Ireland. I did notice a lack of female judoka, lol. I'm the only woman in my class and I noticed exactly two women at a competition my boyfriend went to.

Are you talking still alive as in not injured?

I was already injured going into the match. I actually think I could have taken the guy if I was closer to 100%. I've thrown him before.

My first competition was a grading and I fought a guy who was 140kg when I weighed about 90kg.

I submitted him with Hadaka jime, but it was a close run thing.
